Along our travels Jon and I met a number of people who were adamant for us to allow enough time for our visit to Hoi An, Vietnam. Every person we met expressed regret over not giving themselves ample time to enjoy the city properly. So we took their input to heart and planned to spend a week in Hoi An after departing the chaotic yet wonderful city of Hanoi.
Hoi An, which means peaceful meeting place, is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since it is a well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port of the 15th to 19th centuries. Whether exploring the area by foot, bike or boat the city oozes charm and history everywhere you look. It is easy to get lost in thought as you wander the streets, letting the quaint yet relaxing energy of Hoi An win you over-mind, body and soul. I felt so present my entire time there.
In addition to the picturesque scenery of old town, Hoi An is also home to Cua Dai Beach...often referred to as one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Vietnam. While the weather was a bit on the chilly side during our visit, it was still easy to see why the beach has received that accolade...it was stunning.
Natural beauty and charm are not the only factors bringing tourists to Hoi An. With more then four hundred tailor shops in the city offering custom made clothes, shoes or bags, many visitors leave with a new wardrobe at very economical prices. I kept things simple and didn't have anything made up. Jon on the other hand has a new wardrobe for when he returns to the working world...and he might just get ANY job he interviews for based on the quality of his stylish new suits.
After spending a week in Hoi An, I can say with certainty...it is my favorite city along my travels in Southeast Asia.
