Farewell Cambodia, hello Laos

Jon and I spent our last day in Cambodia taking a leisurely tuk-tuk ride around the countryside and temple grounds reflecting on our time in this beautiful country. We were so thankful to have extended our stay, allowing us the extra time needed to really immerse ourselves in the local culture.

After our less than stellar experience with Von Ny on our first day of touring the temples, Pundee became our companion and confident during the balance of our time in Cambodia. Pundee had a smile to light up a room and a spirit to match.

As a orphan raised in a Buddhist monastery, Pundee worked in Thailand for a few years to save up enough money to return home to Cambodia and purchase his own motorcycle and tuk-tuk. He lives in a 9x9 meter room (no kitchen or bathroom) with three other boys. In addition to working seven days a week, he will begin formal English lessons next month. His lessons will cost ten dollars a month, the equivalent of what currently spends on rent. When we learned more about his cost of living we realized how helpful our tips would be in bettering his life.

Prior to meeting us and being requested to take our photo on more then a few occasions, Pundee had never used a camera. When we parted goodbye, we were saddened to learn that he has also never used a computer and that we had no formal way of communicating with our new friend in the future except by sending correspondence through the hotel.

The entire experience of visiting Cambodia exceeded all of my expectations. I fell in love with the country, people and culture my first afternoon there and feel blessed for the memories I made during my visit.

Jon and I departed Cambodia Monday morning...next stop, Laos.
