I arrived to Sydney Sunday
and the hotel gods were smiling down on me, despite my early arrival the
room was ready. After a quick shower and walk around the neighborhood
to get my bearings, it was time to meet up Jon and officially kick off
this chapter of the Operation Live Life adventure.
We
made our way out to take in the sights and quickly detoured from our
plan when we stumbled across the Sydney convention center close to
Darling Harbor. A travel expo was taking place at the convention center
and we needed to book our flights to Melbourne...coincidence, I think
not.
We
met Theresa at the travel desk and she was more then happy to assist us
in our plans to get to Melbourne the following weekend despite the fact
that her company does not make any money on domestic flights they help
to arrange. Although we could have easily booked the flights ourselves,
Theresa was our free wifi, Internet connection that allowed us to get
the tickets and preserve our precious international data plans.
We
finished off our day of sightseeing by stopping into the Opera Bar, an
outside underground lounge across from the Sydney Opera House offering
stunning views of the sky harbor bridge and the Opera House.
We
woke up early the next day to celebrate Super Bowl Monday at the sports
bar in Sydney's casino. We arrived to a packed room of Americans and
oddly enough, just as many Australians, who had taken the day off to
watch the game. We settled in and ordered Miller High Life, the
champagne of beers, and chicken wings for breakfast.
Things
were shaping up just like any other super bowl celebration until the
first commercial break. Those wonderful commercials that are almost as
popular as the super bowl game itself are not televised outside of
America...what a bummer.
After
the game we met a group of off duty police officers who invited us to
join them and their friends at a local pub. So there we were- Jon, me
and twenty police officers enjoying a drink....I have never felt safer.
We
said goodbye to our new friends and made our way to meet two of Jon's
old students for dinner. We had just enough time to catch up before Jon
and I made our way to the bus station to take our overnight ride to
Byron Bay.
When
all was said and done, we spent 36 hours in Sydney. While it would have
been nice to have more time there, we certainly made the most out of
the time we had.
Jon, me and our travel agent Theresa.
